Multiple Camera Production

When setting up for a multi-camera production, remember to:

  1. BREATHE
  2. Take a look at your surroundings,
    1. where do the best sight lines exist? Put a camera there.
  3. Don't be afraid to ask for help

EQUIPMENT

While the exact equipment might change between productions, here's a list of items that you will need for this page to work:

  1. Video Box (Blackmagic Production Box)
  2. Audio Box (multiple In/Out Audio Box) OR Audio Board and Press Box
  3. CTV parts box
  4. Two (2) or more Cameras and Tripods

SETUP

  1. Load all gear into the location
  2. If you have a table, setup the table where you want the Director's Base to be.
    1. If you don't have a table, go find a table and put it where you want the Director's Base to be.
  3. Find power, run a single AC extension power cord to from the wall socket to the Director's Base.
    1. Connect an AC multi-outlet power strip to the extension cord
      1. Be sure to leave one outlet open on the power strip, this is in case you need to daisy chain power strips together.
  4. Plug in the Wireless Headset Base first.
    1. Hand out Wireless Headsets to all Camera Operators and Grips.
      1. Remember to give headsets batteries, before giving them to Camera/Grips.

Setup Cameras

  1. Camera Operators - Grab a camera and tripod, take it to where the director has said they want a camera and set it up.
  2. Grips - Grab power and a video cord, take it to where the camera is being setup.
    1. Ask Director which video cord and power cord you need before running to the camera.

Setup Video Box

  1. Two plugs come out of the Video Box, the power plug for the Blackmagic Production box, and the plug from the AC power strip.
    1. There should be two open outlets on the power strip in the Video Box.
    2. Plug the HD Monitor into one of the open outlets
  2. Cable ends are labelled to where they go
    1. USB from Blackmagic goes to the laptop
    2. Cat5e (yellow) from router goes to the laptop
    3. laptop power supply (held by velcro behind router) plugs into laptop
    4. HDMI from Blackmagic (multiview) goes to HDMI Monitor
    5. Program out HD/SDI from Blackmagic goes to HD/SDI IN on ATMOS Drive (top plug)
  3. Plug power (2 plugs from box) In
    1. Power to Blackmagic will come on automatically
    2. Turn on the AC Power Strip in box
      1. Turn on Monitor
      2. Turn on Laptop
      3. Insert HD into ATMOS
        1. Turn on ATMOS

Blackmagic Production 4K Studio

  • Cameras will plug into either the HDMI (inputs 1-4) or HD/SDI (inputs 5-8).
  • On Laptop, double-click on ATEM icon on desktop to open controller software

Inputs for ATEM. Inputs 1-4 = HMDI. Inputs 5-8 = SDI. Additional cables already connected, do not unplug, they will have labels on their opposite ends telling you where they go to.

Green = plug the Analog Video in Red = Plug the SDI cable in (should already be connected)

Audio Box

  • Three (3) Power plugs should come out of the audio box
  • Do Not Unplug the 1/4“ to XLR from the Monitor Out on the Alesis to Input 1 on the Shure. - This feeds the Press Box's seven (7) audio outs that other news sources can plug into.

Setup Audio

  1. Plug RCA-1/4” from Audio IN on Blackmagic into MAIN OUT on Alesis Board.
  2. Plug the locations source audio into one of the inputs on the Alesis board.
    1. There are two (2) XLR-XLR cords in the back of the Audio box for you to use if you need.
  3. Test Audio by plugging headphones into the Alesis board.
  4. Test Audio by plugging headphones into the Shure Board.
  5. Test Audio by plugging headphones into the ATMOS Recorder (found in Video Box), (bottom jack).

Multiple Microphone Setup

  • Plug audio inputs into the Alesis board first, then if overflow is needed plug into the Shure board.
    • Shure Board: Input 1 is reserved for overflow from the Alesis board.

ARE YOU READY TO RECORD?

After everything is connected, follow the checklist:

  • Do you have Video?
  • Can you talk to your camera operators?
    • Can your operators hear you?
    • Can you hear your operators?
  • Can you hear the audio clearly and cleanly?
  • Have you numbered your cameras?
  • Do your operators know which camera they are?

If you can answer yes to all of the above questions, then you are ready to record.
