Studio Gallery - Setup and usage

The Gallery (or Studio Control Room,) is used whenever the studio is in use for “Live to Tape” productions. If you are working on a production that requires multiple cameras, but you want to be able to edit those cameras separately - DO NOT USE THE GALLERY.

If you are working on a production that requires multiple cameras, and you want the least amount of editing to deal with once done with your recording, then you are on the right page.

The Equipment

The "Light Switch"

The two panel light switch at the back of the rack, to the right of the window into the studio, is the Master Power Switch for the Gallery.

AJA Helo

The Helo allows for recording to SD Chip (upto 128 GB,) and streaming at the same time. It can be controlled both by a web interface, and by pressing the buttons on the front of the device.

Air Check & Streaming Confidence Monitor

The Monitor on the desk, shows the feed from the AJA Helo.

Audio Board

The Audio board has many inputs, not all will be used in every production. Inputs 1-5 are matched to the inputs on the patch panel. Inputs 6 - 28, require cables to be run through the patch panel in order to connect them.

Talk-Back Amplifier

The Amplifier (sits on top of the desk, under the Air Check monitor) must be on in order for the talk-back function of the audio board to work.

Blackmagic Design ATEM Production 4K Studio

This 1U unit is the master brain to the entire gallery. It is connected with the Audio Board inputs, Camera inputs, and the outputs to the monitors and AJA Helo.

Multi-Monitor Display

The large television set on the desk is used by the Blackmagic Design ATEM unit, it is where the multiple monitor display is shown.

Laptop Computer and Extension Monitor

The Laptop and Monitor are connected, to allow for an extended desktop and ease of seeing all the buttons and choices on the software for the ATEM device.

The Speakers in the Gallery are controlled via the Speaker Amplifier in the middle of the desk.

Setup

So, you're ready to use the Gallery and come to find out that the Blackmagic Design Production Box (BMD) was recently used On-Location! meaning that the main control unit for the gallery is NOT connected to everything else

Don't fret. Here's how to connect the box to everything else:

  1. Locate the BMD
  2. Put the BMD onto the small table next to the Gallery Desk
  3. Open the BMD panels,
    1. The cables for the Gallery are all labelled, simply connect them to their corresponding ports on the rear of the BMD.
    2. Main Cameras come via SDI cables, numbered 1-4. These goto SDI Inputs 5-8.
    3. Additional Cameras will be fed via HDMI cables, they will goto HDMI Inputs 1-4
    4. The Cable labelled Program Out (PRGOUT,) feeds to the AJA Helo device (it is located on the far side of the Gallery under the Monitor in the Rack)
      1. You may need to disconnect the cable from the Program Out port on the BMD (When we are in the field On-Location, we use the AJA Helo inside of the Box.)
      2. This connects to the BMD SDI Output port, the otherside is already connected to the AJA Helo.
    5. Multi-Monitor plug (HDMI) connects to the large TV set, HDMI 1 input
    6. Laptop Cables:
      1. USB
      2. Cat6e (Yellow)
      3. Laptop Power (the power box is on the bottom shelf of the box)
      4. Laptop then connects via VGA cable to the secondary monitor
    7. Plug The MAIN POWER (Black Cord) and Extension cord (Grey Cord) into the Power Supply Unit (Large Black Box on floor under the desk).

Once everything is plugged in, then move on to turning everything on.

Turning Everything ON

Procedure for turning the Gallery ON:

  1. Start by flipping both of the switches on the panel to the UP position.
  2. Then, working your way Right to Left
    1. Power on the Air Check Confidence Monitor
    2. Turn on the Audio board. The power switch is on the back of the board, next to the power plug.
    3. Turn on the Multi-Monitor Display. The power switch is on the back of the TV set, on the Left side, bottom button.
    4. Turn on the Laptop. The power button is in the top-middle of the keyboard. Turn on the Extension Monitor. The power button is on the underside, on the Right Side.
    5. Turn on the Talk-Balk Amplifier. And then finally, turn on the Gallery Speakers.

Online Manual

  • DO NOT CHANGE THE IP SETTINGS IN THE SETUP MENU
  • Remember to use straight cuts, unless the producer requests otherwise
  • DSK = downstream keyer, needs to be setup in the panels on the right side of the ATEM software
  • Upstream key, accessible via the KEY 1 button on the control panel
  • Remember to Name your inputs, start with the input number, then either the name of the operator or the function of the camera or input.
  • Examples:
    • input 5 is a camera operated by Joe = 5 - Joe
    • input 6 is a skype window from a laptop = 6 - Skype
  • Connecting another computer for control of graphics or audio is as easy as running a new Cat6e (Must be CATE6e) cable from the computer to the router in the BMD box.

Check the Recording

When you are done recording, press the RECORD button on the AJA Helo. The Lights should stop flashing. When the light next to the SD Chip is Solid Green, you can remove the chip. Plug the SD Chip into the SD Card reader next to the computer in the Gallery (Currently NLE 7 - Graphics/TD Position). Open the AJA folder and find the clip that is your recording, double-click on it to play the file.

Shutting Down

Go in reverse as you did from Turning everything On.

  1. Working your way Left to Right
    1. Turn off the Multi-Monitor Display. The power switch is on the back of the TV set, on the Left side, bottom button.
    2. Shut Down the Laptop, using the Start Button, and choosing SHUT DOWN.
    3. Turn off the Audio board. The power switch is on the back of the board, next to the power plug.
    4. If you were streaming, then turn off the Stream Confidence Monitor.
    5. Power down the Air Check Confidence Monitor
    6. Turn off the Talk-Balk Amplifier. And then finally, turn off the Gallery Speakers.
    7. Now, you can put the switches on the rear wall to the DOWN position.
